WINDOWS SERVER 2008 SECURITY UPDATES UPDATE
Your efforts DOSSed off because of update revert. I am just about to print out Andy YOU's suggestions (I may even make a batch file to perform the Re-registering components part) and give that a go, but if there is any other advice or things I can try please let me know. I also tried choosing the "Last Known Good" option whilst booting from the Server's Hard Disk, however this just resulted in the same Configuring/Reverting loop unfortunately. Would you like to connect to the internet to look for a suitable program?" - I wasn't connected to the Internet, so couldn't try the suggested action. I downloaded the System Update Readiness Tool, put it on a USB stick and copied the to the Server Hard Drive. Tried the sfc /scannow command, but the response was "There is a system repair pending which requires a reboot to complete. Renamed the \sofwaredistribution folder, though I had previously tried this before posting here.Ģ. (If I try to boot from the Server's Hard Disk and select Safe Mode with Command Prompt it follows the exact same "Preparing to configure Windows/Reverting changes" loop, and neverġ.

Results as follows:īooted from Windows Server 200 Enterprise DVD into Command Prompt. I am very busy with clients, and at the same time I have 2 building projects ongoing at home, so I haven't had much chance to look at the problem. Hi Guys, Many Thanks for your help so far. Is there any way to resolve this issue, or do I need to start thinking about a clean Server O/S install? I would ideally like to salvage my server, since a fresh server will mean reconnecting several Client PCs and a couple of Member Servers (one with

My server is pretty much a paper weight right now! I have managed to boot the Server from a separate DVD, which has allowed me to perform hardware checks (all fine), and to copy my latest Data from the Server's Drives (which has helped me continue running my business in the Server's absence), but beyond that It's my Domain controller/File Server too, which makes it all the more frustrating (especially the lack of DHCP reservations on my network). Since I've had this problem I have probably been through the preparing changes/reverting changes cycle about 9 times, so I believe it's unlikely it's going to resolve itself. So far I've tried to follow a few threads which I found here to reset the Windows Update process by booting from CD/DVD and renaming files etc., but sadly the Server still ends up in the same endless loop afterwards.

Granted, it's a Windows 2008 R2 Enterprise Server (Partner Edition - I'm a Partner and Action Pack Subscriber), and I'm a little behind in upgrading it, but that's exactly what my plan was - To upgrade to a newer Server O/S.īecause I'm an Action Pack Subscriber I was hoping to use one of my Business Critical Support Tickets, but sadly I am unable to select Windows 2008 R2 as the O/S, so cannot open the ticket (either online, or via the phone). The only way I've found to stop it from continually looping in this cycle is to leave a Linux Boot DVD in the Server's DVD drive, otherwise it would be constantly looping, or I would have to sit and watch it for hours to switch off at the right time. The frustrating thing is to complete the cycle each time I try something new it potentially takesĥ hours to complete the cycle, but ends up at the same place. Upon rebooting it starts the exact same cycle, and reverts the changes again.

So I left it to revert it's changes (which took around 4 further hours). It turns out that it displays the above message for about an hour, and then displays "Failure configuring Windows updates. When I looked about 6 hours later it was still saying the same message, so I monitored it more closely. Do not turn off you computer." message, so decided to let it do it's thing and come back later. Upon investigating the Server I saw it was showing the "Preparing to configure Windows. I noticed my server was down one day a few weeks ago when I tried to use one of my desktop PCs.
